Why does my doctor want this test alongside a CBC?

A CBC tells your doctor that you're anemic, but a reticulocyte count tells them whether your bone marrow is responding appropriately, which narrows down the likely cause significantly.

What does a low reticulocyte count mean?

It suggests your bone marrow isn't producing new red cells fast enough, which can happen with iron, B12, or folate deficiency, or with bone marrow disorders.

How is this test used to check treatment progress?

After starting iron or vitamin supplementation for anemia, a rising reticulocyte count within 5–10 days is often the earliest sign that treatment is working, even before hemoglobin levels fully recover.
