Reticulocyte Count Test

A reticulocyte count measures the percentage (or absolute number) of reticulocytes — young, still-maturing red blood cells — circulating in your bloodstream.

Reticulocytes are released from the bone marrow before they fully mature into regular red blood cells, so counting them gives doctors a direct window into how actively your bone marrow is currently producing new red cells.

This makes the test especially useful for understanding the underlying cause of anemia: a bone marrow that's working hard to compensate for blood loss or destruction will push out more reticulocytes than usual, while a marrow that's struggling to produce cells at all will show a low count despite the presence of anemia.

It's also used to track recovery after treatments like iron replacement, vitamin B12 injections, or chemotherapy, since a rising reticulocyte count is often the earliest sign that the bone marrow is responding.
