How to choose a lab

  • Prefer labs accredited by NABL, with a qualified pathologist signing the reports.
  • Check whether the test you need is offered, the turnaround time and whether reports are available online.
  • Compare package prices with single-test prices; a larger package is not always better for your needs.
  • Ask about home sample collection charges and timing, and follow fasting instructions for tests such as blood sugar and cholesterol.

How home sample collection works

  • Choose a test or health package and a lab that offers home collection for your address, then pick a time slot.
  • A trained phlebotomist visits, collects the sample using sealed, single-use equipment and takes it to the lab.
  • Reports are usually shared online or by email; turnaround depends on the test, from the same day to several days for specialised tests.
  • Keep your prescription, ID and any previous reports handy, and mention medicines you take.

Preparing for common tests

Fasting blood sugar and the lipid profile usually need 8 to 12 hours of fasting (water is allowed). Thyroid and some hormone tests are often done in the morning, and urine tests are best on a first-morning sample. Avoid heavy exercise and alcohol the day before, and do not stop prescribed medicines unless your doctor tells you to. Each test page lists its own preparation steps.

Understanding your report

Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, methods, age and sex, so compare results with the range printed on your own report. A value just outside the range is not always a problem; discuss results with your doctor, who can interpret them alongside your symptoms and history.
