Heart Valve Replacement

Heart valve replacement is open-heart surgery that removes a severely diseased or malfunctioning heart valve and replaces it with either a mechanical or biological tissue prosthetic valve, restoring normal blood flow through the heart. Diseased valves that are too narrowed or too leaky place ongoing strain on the heart muscle, which can lead to heart failure if left untreated. The choice between a mechanical valve, which lasts a lifetime but requires permanent blood thinners, and a tissue valve, which does not require long-term anticoagulation but wears out sooner, is made jointly with the patient based on age and lifestyle. Once replaced, the new valve is expected to restore near-normal heart function in most patients.

Heart Valve Replacement is recommended for patients diagnosed with specific conditions where other approaches have been insufficient. Your Cardiothoracic Surgery specialist will assess your suitability based on your diagnosis, health history, and treatment goals.

The typical duration is 6-10 weeks recovery. This may vary based on the complexity of your case and individual response to treatment.

Recovery typically takes Intensive care monitoring is provided initially, with a hospital stay of six to eight days. Cardiac rehabilitation is recommended over six to ten weeks, lifelong anticoagulation therapy is required for mechanical valves, and regular echocardiogram follow-up monitors valve function.. Your care team will provide specific instructions based on your response and overall health.

Side effects vary by individual and are detailed in the section above. Your specialist will discuss all risks and benefits with you before treatment begins. Serious adverse effects are uncommon but are part of the informed consent process.

Heart Valve Replacement has a documented success rate of 90-95% at accredited facilities. Outcomes depend on disease stage, patient health, and adherence to the treatment plan and aftercare instructions.
