Malaria Antigen Test (RDT)

The Malaria Antigen Test, often called a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT), detects specific proteins produced by malaria parasites directly in a blood sample, offering results within 15 to 30 minutes rather than the hours a traditional microscope-based diagnosis might take.

This speed makes it an invaluable tool, particularly in settings where quick diagnosis and treatment decisions are critical, since malaria can progress rapidly and become life-threatening if treatment is delayed.

Different rapid test kits can identify specific Plasmodium species — most importantly distinguishing Plasmodium falciparum, which causes the most severe and potentially fatal form of malaria, from other, generally milder species.

While highly useful for rapid screening, a positive or ambiguous rapid test result is often confirmed with a traditional blood smear examination, which remains the gold standard for definitively identifying the parasite species and estimating infection severity.
