Serum Creatinine Test in Janpath, Delhi

Serum creatinine is ordered to evaluate:

• Suspected kidney disease or declining kidney function
• High blood pressure or diabetes, both major risk factors for kidney damage
• Before certain medications or imaging procedures that use contrast dye, which can stress the kidneys
• Monitoring known kidney disease over time

Elevated creatinine suggests:

• Reduced kidney filtering capacity
• Acute kidney injury
• Chronic kidney disease
• Dehydration, which can temporarily elevate creatinine

1. Fasting may be requested if this test is combined with others, but isn't strictly necessary on its own.
2. Avoid excessive protein intake or intense exercise the day before testing, as both can temporarily raise creatinine levels.
3. Stay adequately hydrated before your test unless advised otherwise.

Your doctor will often use your creatinine value to calculate an eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate), which gives a clearer, more clinically useful picture of your actual kidney filtering capacity than the raw creatinine number alone.
