About Platelet Count Test in Hari Nagar Ashram, Delhi

Platelets (thrombocytes) are tiny cell fragments made in the bone marrow that circulate in the blood and help it clot. When a blood vessel is injured, platelets rush to the spot, stick together and plug the leak. A platelet count measures how many of these cells are in a given volume of blood.

The test is widely known in India because of dengue, where platelet counts can fall sharply a few days into the illness and are monitored daily. But low platelets (thrombocytopenia) can have many other causes, including viral infections, malaria, certain medicines, autoimmune conditions, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, liver disease, and bone marrow disorders. High platelets (thrombocytosis) are most often a reaction to iron deficiency, infection, inflammation or surgery, and less often a bone marrow disease.

Platelet count is part of a complete blood count (CBC), and it can also be requested alone for quick monitoring. Because platelets can clump in the test tube and give a falsely low reading, labs often confirm an unexpected low count by looking at a blood smear.

Platelets in dengue: what the numbers mean

In dengue, platelets typically start to fall from around day 3 to day 5 of fever, reach the lowest point around days 5 to 7 and recover as the fever settles. A low count alone is not an indication for transfusion. Doctors decide based on bleeding, falling counts with rising hematocrit, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting and other warning signs. Many patients with counts of 20,000–50,000 recover with fluids, rest and monitoring alone. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in suspected dengue, which can increase bleeding risk.

Other causes of low platelets

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, liver disease with enlarged spleen, malaria, chikungunya, HIV, certain medicines, alcohol, pregnancy-related conditions and bone marrow problems can all lower platelets. A blood smear and further tests help separate these.

High platelets

Reactive thrombocytosis is common after infection, surgery or with iron deficiency, and usually settles after the cause is treated. Persistently very high counts may need tests for a bone marrow condition.

Platelet function matters too

Besides the count, platelets must work properly. Aspirin, clopidogrel and some conditions reduce function, which is why surgeons ask you about medicines before an operation.

When Should You Get Platelet Count Test in Hari Nagar Ashram, Delhi

A platelet count is commonly ordered for:

  • Fever during dengue season, to follow the trend of platelets.
  • Easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, heavy periods, blood in urine or stools, or tiny red or purple spots on the skin (petechiae).
  • Before surgery, dental procedures, biopsy or childbirth.
  • Monitoring chemotherapy, radiation or medicines that can lower platelets.
  • Evaluating anaemia, an enlarged spleen, liver disease or suspected blood disorders.
  • Following known low or high platelet counts.
  • Routine health check-ups as part of a CBC.

Conditions Platelet Count Test Can Detect in Hari Nagar Ashram, Delhi

Abnormal platelet counts may be seen in:

  • Low platelets: dengue and other viral fevers, malaria, immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), chemotherapy, liver disease with enlarged spleen, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, certain medicines, pregnancy-related conditions, and bone marrow disorders.
  • High platelets: iron deficiency, infections and inflammation, recent surgery or splenectomy, and myeloproliferative disorders.

A very low count with bleeding is an emergency. A high count usually needs a search for an underlying cause.

How to Prepare for Platelet Count Test in Hari Nagar Ashram, Delhi

  1. No fasting is required for a platelet count alone.
  2. Tell your doctor about medicines you take, especially blood thinners, aspirin, antibiotics and any recent vaccinations or illnesses.
  3. If your count is low and you are in dengue season, follow your doctor's advice about how often to repeat the test, and don't rely on home remedies alone to raise the count.

Below 20,000Very low — risk of spontaneous bleeding; medical attention needed
Above 450,000High (thrombocytosis)

Treatment decisions, including whether platelet transfusion is needed in dengue, depend on symptoms and bleeding, not on the number alone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Platelet Count Test in Hari Nagar Ashram, Delhi

What is a dangerous platelet count?

Counts below about 20,000 per microlitre carry a risk of spontaneous bleeding, and below 10,000 especially so. But bleeding signs and the cause matter more than the number alone.

Why do platelets fall in dengue?

The dengue virus affects the bone marrow and also causes platelets to be destroyed or used up. Counts usually drop around days 3–7 and recover as the illness resolves.

How can I increase my platelet count?

Treat the underlying cause and follow your doctor's advice. Papaya leaf extract and similar remedies are popular, but the evidence is limited, and they shouldn't replace medical monitoring. Seek urgent care for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, vomiting or drowsiness during dengue.

Can platelets be falsely low?

Yes. Platelets can clump in the sample tube, giving an artificially low count. Labs usually confirm unexpected results with a blood smear or a repeat sample.

Do I need to fast for a platelet count?

No. Fasting is not needed.

Are high platelets a problem?

Mildly high platelets are often a reaction to iron deficiency or infection and settle when that is treated. Persistently very high counts need evaluation by a doctor.

How often should platelets be checked in dengue?

Usually daily, or as your doctor advises, from day 3 or 4 until a clear recovery trend.

Do papaya leaves really raise platelets?

Some small studies are promising, but evidence is limited. Do not use them in place of medical monitoring.

What is a normal platelet count in pregnancy?

Counts may be slightly lower in pregnancy, and your doctor will interpret low values carefully.
