D-Dimer Test

D-Dimer is a small protein fragment produced when a blood clot inside your body breaks down, and measuring it in the blood helps doctors evaluate whether abnormal clotting activity might be occurring.

This test is particularly valued in emergency medicine for its ability to help rule out serious clotting conditions quickly — because D-Dimer is highly sensitive, a normal (negative) result makes conditions like deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism quite unlikely, which can help avoid unnecessary further imaging.

However, D-Dimer is not specific to clotting disorders alone; many other situations, including recent surgery, pregnancy, infection, and even normal aging, can also raise D-Dimer levels, which is why a positive result alone doesn't confirm a clot and usually requires imaging for confirmation.

This combination of high sensitivity but limited specificity is exactly why D-Dimer is used primarily as a rule-out tool rather than a definitive diagnostic test on its own.
