Numbness

Numbness is a loss of normal sensation in a part of the body, often described as a feeling of pins and needles, tingling, or complete lack of feeling. It can affect a small area, like fingertips, or a larger region, such as an entire limb or one side of the body. Numbness may be temporary, such as from sitting in one position too long, or persistent, pointing to a nerve or circulation problem. The most common causes include: Nerve compression (carpal tunnel syndrome); diabetes-related nerve damage; vitamin B12 deficiency; stroke.

Numbness becomes an emergency when it is unusually severe, sudden in onset, accompanied by other serious symptoms (chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting), or occurs in vulnerable individuals such as infants, the elderly, or people with serious chronic conditions.

Diagnosis of Numbness begins with a detailed medical history and physical examination of the limbs/extremities. Your doctor may order blood tests, urine analysis, imaging studies (X-ray, ultrasound, MRI), or refer you to a specialist depending on suspected causes. Early diagnosis leads to faster, more effective treatment.

Mild cases of Numbness can often be managed with self-care: Change positions frequently to avoid prolonged pressure on nerves; and gently stretch or massage the affected area if numbness is due to temporary compression. Persistent; worsening. However, if symptoms are severe, persistent, or worsening, always seek medical attention rather than relying solely on home remedies.

Numbness is typically classified as episodic. Acute forms usually resolve within a few days to weeks with appropriate care. Chronic or recurrent numbness may persist for months and requires longer-term management by a healthcare professional.
