Delayed Speech

A child not developing spoken language skills within the expected age range, which may involve limited vocabulary, difficulty forming words or sentences, or minimal verbal communication compared to peers. It can occur alone or alongside delays in other areas of development. The most common causes include: Hearing impairment; autism spectrum disorder; general developmental delay; oral-motor difficulties.

Delayed Speech becomes an emergency when it is unusually severe, sudden in onset, accompanied by other serious symptoms (chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting), or occurs in vulnerable individuals such as infants, the elderly, or people with serious chronic conditions.

Diagnosis of Delayed Speech begins with a detailed medical history and physical examination of the brain / mouth. Your doctor may order blood tests, urine analysis, imaging studies (X-ray, ultrasound, MRI), or refer you to a specialist depending on suspected causes. Early diagnosis leads to faster, more effective treatment.

Mild cases of Delayed Speech can often be managed with self-care: Talk; read; and sing to the child frequently. However, if symptoms are severe, persistent, or worsening, always seek medical attention rather than relying solely on home remedies.

Delayed Speech is typically classified as chronic. Acute forms usually resolve within a few days to weeks with appropriate care. Chronic or recurrent delayed speech may persist for months and requires longer-term management by a healthcare professional.

You should see a doctor if: Consult a paediatrician or speech-language pathologist if a child has no words by 18 months; fewer than 50 words or is not combining words by age 2; or if there is any regression or loss of previously acquired language skills.
