Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes caused by a buildup of bilirubin, a substance produced when red blood cells break down, usually reflecting a problem with the liver, gallbladder, or blood. It may be accompanied by dark urine, pale stools, itching, and fatigue. The degree of yellowing can range from subtle to very noticeable.
