What a radiologist does
A radiologist is a doctor who interprets medical images and performs image-guided procedures. Training is an MD or DNB in Radiodiagnosis after MBBS. Radiologists do not usually see patients for treatment; they report scans for your treating doctor, and interventional radiologists perform procedures such as biopsies, drainage and treatment of blood vessels using imaging for guidance.
Common imaging tests
- X-ray: quick and inexpensive; used for bones, chest and some abdominal problems.
- Ultrasound: uses sound waves with no radiation; used in pregnancy, abdomen, thyroid, breast and blood vessels.
- CT scan: detailed cross-sectional images using X-rays; useful in emergencies, chest, abdomen and head injury.
- MRI: uses magnets and radio waves, no radiation; best for brain, spine, joints and soft tissue.
- Mammography, DEXA, PET-CT and angiography for specific purposes.
Preparing for a scan
Follow the instructions given: some abdominal ultrasounds need a full bladder or fasting; CT with contrast may need a recent kidney function test (creatinine) and fasting; MRI requires removing metal objects and informing staff about pacemakers, implants or pregnancy. Bring previous scans and reports for comparison.
Radiation safety
X-ray and CT use ionising radiation, so doctors should order them only when needed, using the lowest dose possible. Tell the staff if you are or might be pregnant. Ultrasound and MRI do not use ionising radiation.
Choosing a centre
Look for a centre with qualified radiologists (MD/DNB), modern, well-maintained equipment and prompt reports. Prices vary widely by scan, centre and city and may change, so compare and confirm what the quoted price includes. Compare imaging centres and book on Lab Dekho.
