📖What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a term for pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body, which runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. It occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes compressed or irritated, most commonly by a herniated disc in the lower spine or bone spurs pressing on part of the nerve. The pain typically affects only one side of the body and can range from a mild ache to sharp, burning discomfort that makes standing, sitting, or walking difficult. While often self-limiting and resolving within a few weeks with conservative treatment, persistent or severe cases may indicate significant nerve compression requiring further evaluation.
