๐Ÿ“–What is Retinal Detachment?

Retinal detachment is a serious, sight-threatening emergency in which the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, pulls away from the underlying supportive tissue that supplies it with oxygen and nutrients. Once detached, the affected portion of the retina rapidly loses function, and without prompt treatment permanent vision loss can occur within days. It commonly follows a posterior vitreous detachment that creates a retinal tear, through which fluid seeps and lifts the retina away from its base. It can also result from trauma, advanced diabetic eye disease, or occur more readily in people with severe nearsightedness.
