📖What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration, most commonly age-related macular degeneration, is a progressive eye disease that damages the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision needed for reading and recognizing faces. It exists in two forms: the more common dry type, caused by gradual thinning and deposits beneath the macula, and the less common but more aggressive wet type, caused by abnormal blood vessel growth that leaks fluid or blood. It is a leading cause of severe vision loss in people over 60, though it typically spares peripheral vision, allowing many patients to retain a degree of independence.
