📖What is Liver Cancer?

Liver cancer refers to a malignant tumour that originates in the liver, with hepatocellular carcinoma being the most common type and typically arising in a liver already damaged by chronic disease such as cirrhosis. The vast majority of liver cancer cases develop against a background of long-standing liver injury from chronic hepatitis B or C infection, alcohol-related liver disease, or fatty liver disease, all of which create an environment conducive to the abnormal cell changes that lead to cancer. Because early liver cancer often causes no symptoms, it is frequently diagnosed at a more advanced stage unless patients with known risk factors, such as cirrhosis, undergo regular surveillance imaging and blood testing. Treatment options and prognosis depend heavily on the size and number of tumours, whether the cancer has spread beyond the liver, and the underlying degree of liver function impairment. Prevention through hepatitis vaccination and management of chronic liver disease remains the most effective strategy against this cancer.
