Bronchitis Specialists in Prem Nagar, Delhi

What is Bronchitis?

Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchial tubes that carry air to and from the lungs, causing them to swell and produce excess mucus that triggers coughing and breathing difficulty. Acute bronchitis is most often caused by the same viruses responsible for the common cold and flu, typically resolving within a few weeks as the airway inflammation subsides. Chronic bronchitis, by contrast, is a long-term condition defined by a persistent productive cough lasting at least three months over two consecutive years, and is considered a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease usually linked to smoking or prolonged irritant exposure. The distinction between acute and chronic bronchitis is clinically important, as their causes, expected course, and management differ significantly. Most cases of acute bronchitis are self-limiting and managed with supportive care rather than antibiotics.

Causes of Bronchitis

Acute bronchitis is most commonly caused by viral infections similar to those causing the common cold, spreading through respiratory droplets and close contact. Chronic bronchitis is primarily caused by long-term exposure to irritants, especially cigarette smoke, but also air pollution and occupational dust or chemical fumes. Recurrent respiratory infections and pre-existing lung conditions can increase susceptibility to both forms.

Symptoms of Bronchitis

Persistent cough with clear, yellow, or greenish mucus, chest discomfort or soreness, wheezing, mild fever, fatigue, shortness of breath, sore throat, in chronic bronchitis a cough lasting months at a time

Treatment & Types of Bronchitis in Prem Nagar, Delhi

Acute bronchitis is managed with rest, fluids, and symptomatic relief using cough suppressants, expectorants, or bronchodilators as needed, since antibiotics are generally ineffective against the underlying viral cause. Chronic bronchitis is treated similarly to other forms of COPD, using bronchodilator and, when indicated, inhaled corticosteroid therapy, alongside pulmonary rehabilitation. Smoking cessation is essential for chronic bronchitis and significantly slows further lung damage.

Bronchitis is classified as acute bronchitis, a short-term inflammation usually caused by the same viruses as the common cold and resolving within a few weeks, or chronic bronchitis, defined by a persistent productive cough lasting at least three months over two consecutive years and considered a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, usually linked to long-term smoking or irritant exposure.
