Causes of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
Temporomandibular joint disorder can result from injury to the jaw or joint, chronic teeth grinding or clenching that overloads the joint and surrounding muscles, arthritis affecting the joint's cartilage, or displacement of the joint's cushioning disc. Stress-related muscle tension, poor jaw alignment or bite problems, and connective tissue disorders can also contribute. In many cases, a combination of structural, muscular, and behavioral factors is involved rather than a single identifiable cause.
