What is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder?
Temporomandibular joint disorder, often abbreviated TMJ disorder or TMD, refers to a group of conditions affecting the joint connecting the jawbone to the skull along with the surrounding muscles that control jaw movement. This joint is used constantly for chewing, speaking, and yawning, and dysfunction can arise from problems with the joint's cartilage disc, muscle strain from clenching or grinding, or joint inflammation such as arthritis. Symptoms often fluctuate in intensity and can be triggered or worsened by stress, poor posture, or habitual teeth clenching. While often manageable with conservative measures, severe or persistent cases can significantly affect eating and quality of life.
