What is H. Pylori Infection?

Helicobacter pylori infection is a common bacterial infection of the stomach lining caused by the spiral-shaped bacterium H. pylori, which is uniquely adapted to survive in the highly acidic environment of the stomach. The bacteria burrow into the protective mucus layer of the stomach, causing chronic low-grade inflammation that can persist for years or even decades without producing noticeable symptoms in many infected individuals. Over time, this persistent inflammation is a leading cause of gastritis and peptic ulcers, and long-standing infection is also recognised as a significant risk factor for stomach cancer. Infection is extremely common in India, largely acquired in childhood through contaminated food, water, or close contact with infected family members, reflecting broader sanitation conditions.
