What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common nerve compression disorder that occurs when the median nerve, which runs through a narrow passageway in the wrist called the carpal tunnel, becomes compressed or irritated. This compression leads to numbness, tingling, and weakness in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger. It often develops gradually and is associated with repetitive hand movements, certain medical conditions, and anatomical factors that narrow the tunnel. Left untreated, prolonged compression can lead to permanent nerve damage and muscle wasting at the base of the thumb.
