What is Acute Liver Failure?
Acute liver failure is a rare but life-threatening condition in which the liver rapidly loses its ability to function over days to weeks in a person with no pre-existing liver disease, leading to severe impairment of blood clotting and altered mental function. It represents a medical emergency because the liver performs essential functions including detoxification, protein synthesis, and blood clotting factor production, all of which fail rapidly once the condition sets in. Without prompt treatment, and in many cases emergency liver transplantation, the condition carries a high risk of death from complications such as brain swelling, infection, and multi-organ failure.
