📖What is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a very common sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, which primarily infects the genital tract but can also affect the rectum, throat, and eyes. It is often referred to as a silent infection because the majority of infected individuals, particularly women, experience no noticeable symptoms, allowing the infection to go undetected and untreated for extended periods while still being transmissible to sexual partners. If left untreated, chlamydia can ascend into the upper reproductive tract and cause pelvic inflammatory disease in women, a serious condition that can lead to chronic pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. Because of its often silent nature and significant potential complications, routine screening of sexually active young people is widely recommended even in the absence of symptoms.
