Upper GI Endoscopy

Upper GI endoscopy, also known as gastroscopy, is a procedure in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera is passed through the mouth into the oesophagus, stomach and the first part of the small intestine to directly visualise the lining of these organs. It is used to investigate symptoms such as persistent acid reflux, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing or unexplained weight loss, and can identify ulcers, inflammation, tumours or bleeding sites. The procedure also allows for tissue biopsies and certain treatments, such as stopping active bleeding or removing polyps, to be performed in the same sitting. It is considered the most direct and accurate way to evaluate the upper digestive tract.

Mild throat discomfort or bloating typically resolves within 24 hours, and normal eating can usually resume once numbness in the throat subsides.
