Thoracoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a small camera inserted through the chest wall to directly visualize the lungs, pleura and chest cavity, used both to diagnose chest conditions and to perform certain therapeutic interventions. It provides direct visual assessment and the ability to biopsy tissue in situations where imaging alone has failed to establish a diagnosis. Because it uses small incisions between the ribs rather than a full open thoracotomy, patients generally experience considerably less pain and a faster recovery. In addition to diagnosis, the same access can be used therapeutically to drain fluid, treat a collapsed lung, or manage a chest infection.
