Skin Grafting

Skin grafting is a reconstructive surgical procedure that transplants healthy skin from one area of the body, the donor site, to cover a wound or defect caused by burns, trauma, infection or surgical removal of tissue. It is used when a wound is too large to close directly or when the surrounding skin lacks the flexibility to be stretched over the defect. The transplanted skin gradually develops its own blood supply from the underlying wound bed, a process called graft take, which is essential to the graft surviving long-term. Meshing the graft allows a smaller piece of donor skin to cover a larger wound area, though it leaves a characteristic textured pattern as it heals.
