📖About Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy
A sentinel lymph node biopsy identifies and removes the first lymph node(s) that a tumour drains into, to check whether cancer has begun spreading to the lymphatic system. It is commonly used in breast cancer and melanoma staging as a less invasive alternative to removing all lymph nodes in a region. A radioactive tracer and/or blue dye is injected to help the surgeon locate the sentinel node during surgery. If the sentinel node is cancer-free, further lymph node removal can often be avoided.

- 1A small dose of radioactive tracer is injected near the tumour, often the day before or the morning of surgery, and blue dye may also be injected during the operation. Using a handheld gamma probe and visual identification of the dye, the surgeon locates and removes the sentinel node(s), which are then sent for immediate frozen-section or later permanent pathology analysis.
