Polypectomy

Polypectomy is the removal of polyps, small growths on the lining of the colon or other parts of the digestive tract, typically performed during a colonoscopy or upper GI endoscopy. Since many colorectal cancers develop from polyps over time, removing them during a screening procedure is one of the most effective ways to prevent cancer before it develops. The polyp is removed using specialised instruments passed through the endoscope, such as a wire snare or forceps, often combined with electrical current to minimise bleeding. The removed tissue is sent for pathological examination to determine whether it is benign, precancerous or cancerous.
