Joint Aspiration

Joint aspiration, or arthrocentesis, is a procedure in which fluid is withdrawn from a swollen joint using a needle, serving both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Diagnostically, the fluid is analysed to distinguish between causes of joint swelling such as infection, gout, pseudogout or inflammatory arthritis, based on its appearance, cell count and crystal content. Therapeutically, removing excess fluid relieves pressure and pain in the affected joint, often providing immediate symptomatic relief. The procedure is commonly performed on larger joints such as the knee, but can be done on smaller joints as well with careful technique.
