IMRT

Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy, or IMRT, is an advanced form of external beam radiotherapy that varies the intensity and shape of hundreds of individual radiation beamlets to conform tightly to a tumour's three-dimensional shape. This allows higher doses to be delivered to the tumour while significantly sparing adjacent critical structures such as the spinal cord, salivary glands, or rectum. It is especially valuable for tumours near sensitive organs, such as head and neck or prostate cancers. Computer-controlled multileaf collimators shape each beam in real time during treatment.
