Haemodialysis is a life-sustaining treatment for patients with kidney failure in which blood is filtered outside the body through a dialysis machine to remove waste products, excess fluid and toxins that healthy kidneys would normally clear. Blood is drawn from the patient through a vascular access point, passed through a dialyser (artificial kidney) that filters it, and then returned to the body, typically over a three to four hour session performed three times a week. It is used both as a long-term treatment for chronic kidney failure and as a temporary measure for acute kidney injury until kidney function recovers.
