Unlike a needle biopsy that samples only a portion of tissue, an excision biopsy removes the whole lesion along with a margin of healthy tissue, giving pathologists the complete picture needed for an accurate diagnosis. This is particularly valuable when a needle biopsy has been inconclusive or when the lesion's borders need to be fully assessed. In many benign cases, the excision biopsy is curative in itself since the entire abnormal tissue has already been removed.
