Cystoscopy

Cystoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a thin, flexible or rigid scope with a camera to directly examine the inside of the bladder and urethra, allowing detection of tumours, stones, inflammation and structural abnormalities. It provides a direct visual assessment that imaging alone cannot always achieve, particularly for detecting small or flat bladder tumours. The flexible scope version can typically be performed comfortably in the clinic under local anaesthetic gel, while more extensive procedures requiring biopsy may need sedation or general anaesthesia. It is also an important surveillance tool for patients previously treated for bladder cancer to monitor for recurrence.
