Colectomy

A colectomy is the surgical removal of part or all of the colon, most often performed to treat colorectal cancer, severe inflammatory bowel disease, or diverticulitis. Depending on the extent of disease, surgeons may perform a partial (segmental) colectomy or a total colectomy, followed by reconnecting the remaining bowel or creating a stoma.
