Post-Prandial Blood Glucose (PPBG) Test

Post-Prandial Blood Glucose, often abbreviated PPBG, measures your blood sugar level a set time — typically two hours — after eating a meal.

This test captures how effectively your body manages the natural rise in blood sugar that follows eating, which is a different physiological process than the fasting state measured by an FBG test, and it can reveal glucose handling problems that a fasting test alone might miss.

Some people have completely normal fasting glucose but show an abnormal rise after meals, an early pattern sometimes seen in the progression toward Type 2 diabetes, which is why PPBG is often ordered together with fasting glucose for a fuller picture.

It's also a standard part of monitoring blood sugar control in people already diagnosed with diabetes, since post-meal spikes are an important contributor to long-term complications even when fasting levels look reasonable.
