When Should You Get Peripheral Blood Smear Test
A peripheral blood smear is commonly ordered when a CBC shows abnormal results, or to investigate:
- Anemia of unclear cause found on a routine CBC
- Suspected malaria or other blood-borne parasites, especially after travel to an endemic area
- Abnormally high or low white blood cell counts
- Suspected sickle cell disease or thalassemia
- Unexplained bruising alongside abnormal platelet counts
- Follow-up on a suspected blood cancer
