Electrolyte Panel Test

An Electrolyte Panel measures the levels of key minerals — typically sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate — that carry an electrical charge in your blood and are essential for nerve signaling, muscle contraction (including your heartbeat), and maintaining proper fluid balance throughout your body.

These electrolytes work together in a finely tuned balance, and even relatively small shifts in any one of them can have outsized effects on how your heart, muscles, and nervous system function.

The kidneys play a central role in regulating electrolyte levels by controlling how much of each mineral is excreted in urine versus retained in the blood, which is why electrolyte panels are often ordered together with kidney function tests.

This panel is frequently used in hospital settings to monitor patients with vomiting, diarrhea, kidney disease, or those on certain medications like diuretics that can significantly affect electrolyte balance.
