About eGFR Test

eGFR, or estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate, is a calculated value — derived from your blood creatinine level, age, and sex — that estimates how much blood your kidneys are filtering each minute, expressed relative to a standard body surface area.

Rather than measuring a raw chemical level like most blood tests, eGFR translates that information into a more intuitive, clinically meaningful percentage of expected normal kidney function, making it easier for both doctors and patients to understand kidney health at a glance.

eGFR forms the backbone of how chronic kidney disease is staged, with specific eGFR thresholds defining each stage from mild reduction in function through to kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant.

Because it's calculated rather than directly measured, eGFR automatically appears on most standard kidney function test reports whenever creatinine, age, and sex are available, without requiring a separate blood draw.
