Seizure

A seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled burst of electrical activity in the brain that can cause changes in behavior, movement, sensation, or consciousness. It may present as convulsions with violent shaking and loss of consciousness, or more subtly as brief staring spells or unusual sensations. Seizures can last from a few seconds to several minutes and are often followed by confusion or drowsiness. The most common causes include: Epilepsy; high fever in children (febrile seizure); head injury; stroke.

Seizure is considered an emergency when it is sudden, severe, or accompanied by chest pain, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Call 112 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately in such cases.

Diagnosis of Seizure begins with a detailed medical history and physical examination of the brain. Your doctor may order blood tests, urine analysis, imaging studies (X-ray, ultrasound, MRI), or refer you to a specialist depending on suspected causes. You should see a doctor if: Call emergency services immediately if a seizure lasts more than 5 minutes; occurs repeatedly without regaining consciousness; or is a person's first-ever seizure.
