Newborn Jaundice

A yellowish discoloration of a newborn's skin and the whites of the eyes caused by a buildup of bilirubin, a substance produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. It is very common in the first week of life as a newborn's liver is still maturing, and mild cases usually resolve on their own, though higher levels need monitoring and treatment. The most common causes include: Physiological jaundice from immature liver function; breastfeeding or breast milk jaundice; blood group incompatibility (Rh or ABO); prematurity.

Newborn Jaundice becomes an emergency when it is unusually severe, sudden in onset, accompanied by other serious symptoms (chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting), or occurs in vulnerable individuals such as infants, the elderly, or people with serious chronic conditions.

Diagnosis of Newborn Jaundice begins with a detailed medical history and physical examination of the skin / liver. Your doctor may order blood tests, urine analysis, imaging studies (X-ray, ultrasound, MRI), or refer you to a specialist depending on suspected causes. Early diagnosis leads to faster, more effective treatment.

Mild cases of Newborn Jaundice can often be managed with self-care: Frequent breastfeeding (8-12 times a day) helps the baby pass bilirubin through stools; and placing the baby in indirect natural light may offer mild support; but this is not a substitute for medical bilirubin testing and treatment when levels are elevated. Never delay a doctor's assessment for jaundice that appears early or is worsening.. Newborn Jaundice is typically classified as acute. Acute forms usually resolve within a few days to weeks with appropriate care. Chronic or recurrent newborn jaundice may persist for months and requires longer-term management by a healthcare professional.
