Flank Pain

Flank pain is discomfort felt on either side of the back between the ribs and the hip, often described as a deep, dull ache or, in the case of kidney stones, a sudden severe cramping pain that comes in waves. It frequently relates to the kidney on that side but can also arise from muscles, nerves, or other nearby organs. The most common causes include: Kidney stones; pyelonephritis or kidney infection; muscle strain; herpes zoster affecting the nerve along that area.

Flank Pain becomes an emergency when it is unusually severe, sudden in onset, accompanied by other serious symptoms (chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting), or occurs in vulnerable individuals such as infants, the elderly, or people with serious chronic conditions.
