Boils

A boil is a red, painful, pus-filled lump that develops when a hair follicle or oil gland becomes infected, usually with bacteria. It typically starts as a firm, tender area that softens and develops a visible head as pus collects over several days. The most common causes include: Staphylococcus aureus infection; blocked hair follicles; poor hygiene; diabetes.

Boils becomes an emergency when it is unusually severe, sudden in onset, accompanied by other serious symptoms (chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting), or occurs in vulnerable individuals such as infants, the elderly, or people with serious chronic conditions.
