Rectal surgery is usually recommended for rectal cancer, severe or recurrent hemorrhoids that don't respond to non-surgical treatment, rectal prolapse where the rectum slips out through the anus, and complex anal fistulas or fissures. Inflammatory bowel disease affecting the rectum and traumatic rectal injuries can also require surgical repair.

Signs You May Need Rectal Surgery

Warning signs include rectal bleeding, persistent pain or pressure in the rectal area, a change in bowel habits such as narrowing stools or unresolved constipation, and a sensation of tissue protruding from the anus during or after bowel movements. Unexplained weight loss combined with rectal bleeding should prompt urgent evaluation for possible cancer.

Types of Rectal Surgery

Depending on the condition, surgeons may perform a local excision for small tumors, a low anterior resection that removes the diseased segment while preserving the anus, or an abdominoperineal resection with a permanent colostomy for very low rectal cancers. Many of these procedures can now be done laparoscopically or with robotic assistance for faster recovery, while hemorrhoid or prolapse repairs may use stapled or transanal techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need a permanent colostomy after rectal surgery?

Not always — a colostomy is usually only needed for tumors very close to the anal sphincter or in emergencies; many patients keep normal bowel continuity, but your surgeon can confirm what applies to your case.

How painful is recovery?

Discomfort is expected for the first week or two and is managed with medication; most patients return to light activity within 2-4 weeks depending on the specific procedure.

Is rectal cancer surgery curative?

When caught early, rectal cancer surgery combined with chemotherapy or radiation when needed offers a good chance of cure; a colorectal surgeon or oncologist can explain your specific prognosis.

What are the risks?

Possible risks include infection, bleeding, anastomotic leak, and temporary bowel or bladder dysfunction; choosing an experienced colorectal surgical team lowers these risks significantly.

How should I prepare?

You'll typically need bowel preparation, blood tests, and imaging beforehand; follow your surgeon's fasting and medication instructions closely.
