Nephrectomy is performed for kidney cancer, severe kidney damage from chronic infection or obstruction, a non-functioning kidney due to long-standing disease, severe trauma, or to remove a healthy kidney for living-donor transplantation. It is recommended once the kidney's condition threatens the patient's health or, in cancer cases, when removal offers the best chance of complete treatment.

Signs You May Need Nephrectomy

Warning signs of kidney disease requiring evaluation include blood in the urine, persistent flank or back pain, a palpable abdominal mass, unexplained weight loss, and recurrent urinary tract infections. High blood pressure that is difficult to control can also indicate underlying kidney disease that may ultimately require surgical removal.

Types of Nephrectomy

Radical nephrectomy removes the entire kidney along with surrounding fat and sometimes nearby lymph nodes, typically for larger kidney tumors. Partial nephrectomy removes only the diseased portion, preserving healthy kidney tissue and function, and is preferred for smaller tumors, while both can be performed via open, laparoscopic, or robotic-assisted techniques depending on tumor size and location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I live normally with only one kidney?

Yes, most people live a completely normal, healthy life with a single functioning kidney, as the remaining kidney adapts to handle the body's filtering needs on its own.

Is partial nephrectomy better than removing the whole kidney?

When the tumor size and location allow it, partial nephrectomy is generally preferred since it preserves more kidney function, reducing the long-term risk of chronic kidney disease.

How long is recovery after nephrectomy?

Hospital stay is typically three to seven days with full recovery over three to six weeks, and minimally invasive laparoscopic or robotic techniques often allow for a somewhat quicker return to normal activity.

What follow-up is needed after kidney removal for cancer?

Regular imaging and kidney function tests are scheduled to monitor for cancer recurrence and ensure the remaining kidney is functioning well, following a plan set by your urologic oncologist.

Is donating a kidney safe?

Kidney donation is generally very safe for healthy, well-screened donors, with most living donors going on to lead normal lives, though your transplant team will conduct a thorough evaluation to confirm your suitability.
