Why Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Is Needed

This surgery is recommended for chronic sinusitis that persists despite medications, nasal polyps blocking the sinus passages, or structural issues like a deviated septum causing repeated sinus blockage and infection. It's also used to remove benign growths or address complications of long-standing sinus disease that hasn't improved with medical management.

Signs You May Need Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Warning signs include long-lasting nasal congestion, thick nasal discharge, facial pain or pressure around the eyes and forehead, reduced sense of smell, and frequent sinus infections that don't clear with antibiotics. Difficulty breathing through the nose and post-nasal drip persisting for more than 12 weeks despite treatment are classic indicators for surgical evaluation.

Types of Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) uses a thin camera and fine instruments through the nostrils to remove blockages and polyps without external cuts, and is the standard modern approach. Balloon sinuplasty, a less invasive variant, uses a small inflatable balloon to gently widen narrowed sinus openings and is suited to milder blockages, while image-guided navigation systems assist surgeons in more complex or revision cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sinus surgery painful?

The procedure itself is done under anesthesia, and while some congestion, mild discomfort, and nasal packing sensation are expected afterward, most patients find the pain manageable with prescribed medication.

How effective is endoscopic sinus surgery?

Success rates are good, around 88%, with most patients experiencing significant improvement in breathing and reduced infections, though occasional touch-up procedures are sometimes needed for polyps that regrow.

How long is recovery after sinus surgery?

Most people return to work within a week, though full healing of the sinus lining and resolution of congestion can take two to three weeks.

Will I need nasal packing after surgery?

Some surgeons use dissolvable packing or none at all, while others use temporary packing removed within a few days; your ENT surgeon will decide based on your specific surgery.

Can sinus problems come back after surgery?

Yes, especially with nasal polyps or ongoing allergies, so continued use of nasal sprays and regular follow-up with your ENT specialist helps maintain the results long-term.
