Laminectomy is recommended when the lamina and thickened ligaments narrow the spinal canal and press on the spinal cord or nerve roots, most often from spinal stenosis due to age-related degeneration, bulging or herniated discs, bone spurs, or a spinal tumor or fracture. It is also used when a herniated disc needs wider surgical access for removal.

Signs You May Need Laminectomy

Patients typically report chronic back or neck pain, numbness or tingling radiating into the arms or legs, and weakness that makes walking or standing for long periods difficult. Severe cases show sciatica-like leg pain, loss of bladder or bowel control, or difficulty with balance and fine motor coordination, all of which point to significant nerve compression.

Types of Laminectomy

The classic approach is open laminectomy, removing the entire lamina to fully decompress the canal, often combined with spinal fusion for stability. Minimally invasive laminectomy uses tubular retractors and a microscope through a smaller incision for less muscle disruption, while laminotomy or laminoplasty remove only part of the lamina or hinge it open to preserve more of the natural spine structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does laminectomy cost in India?

Costs typically range from roughly Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh depending on whether fusion is combined, the hospital, and city, so it is best to get a personalised quote from a spine surgeon after imaging.

How long is recovery after laminectomy?

Most patients are walking within a day and return to light activity in 4-6 weeks, though full recovery and return to heavy lifting can take a few months, especially if fusion was performed.

Is laminectomy a major risk?

It is generally safe with a high success rate, but like any spine surgery it carries small risks of infection, nerve injury, or dural tears, which a spine surgeon will discuss based on your specific anatomy.

Can spinal stenosis be treated without surgery first?

Yes, physiotherapy, epidural steroid injections, and pain management are usually tried first, with laminectomy reserved for cases where symptoms persist or nerve damage is worsening.

Will I need spinal fusion along with laminectomy?

Fusion is added only if the surgeon expects the spine to become unstable after decompression, which your surgeon will assess based on your scans and the extent of bone removed.
