Splenectomy in Koparde, Satara, Maharashtra

Can I live a normal life without a spleen?

Yes, most people live normally without a spleen, though the liver and other organs take over some of its immune functions, and lifelong precautions against certain infections are advised.

Will I need vaccinations after splenectomy?

Yes, because the spleen helps fight certain bacterial infections, vaccinations against pneumococcus, meningococcus, and Haemophilus influenzae are recommended before or shortly after surgery.

Is laparoscopic splenectomy safer than open surgery?

For planned, non-emergency cases, laparoscopic splenectomy generally means less pain and faster recovery, but emergency trauma cases often require open surgery for rapid bleeding control.

What precautions are needed long-term?

Patients without a spleen should seek prompt medical attention for fevers and may be advised to take preventive antibiotics in certain situations — discuss a personalized plan with your doctor.

How long is the hospital stay?

Typically 2-5 days depending on whether the surgery is done laparoscopically or as an open emergency procedure.
