Lung resection is performed to remove diseased lung tissue affected by cancer, chronic infections such as tuberculosis or fungal disease, bronchiectasis, or severe emphysematous bullae, while preserving as much healthy, functioning lung as possible. It is considered when medical management alone cannot control the underlying disease or when a suspicious mass needs definitive removal and diagnosis.

Signs You May Need Lung Resection

Patients often present with a chronic cough, coughing up blood, recurrent chest infections in the same area, chest pain, and progressive breathlessness. Unexplained weight loss and fatigue can also occur, particularly when the underlying cause is a tumor or long-standing infection damaging lung tissue.

Types of Lung Resection

Wedge resection removes a small, localized portion of lung tissue for limited disease, while segmentectomy removes a larger anatomical segment, and lobectomy removes an entire lobe when disease is more extensive. These can be performed through traditional open thoracotomy or minimally invasive video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), with the least amount of healthy tissue removed that still achieves the treatment goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much lung function will I lose after resection?

This depends on how much tissue is removed; wedge resections and segmentectomies preserve more function than a full lobectomy, and your doctor will assess your baseline lung capacity before recommending the extent of surgery.

Is minimally invasive lung resection available?

Yes, VATS and robotic-assisted approaches are commonly used for eligible patients, offering smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery compared to open thoracotomy.

What is the recovery timeline after lung resection?

Hospital stay is typically five to ten days, with breathing exercises starting immediately and full recovery taking six to twelve weeks depending on the extent of surgery and your overall health.

Will I need a chest tube after surgery?

Yes, a temporary chest tube is usually placed to drain fluid and air and help the lung re-expand, and it is typically removed within a few days once drainage decreases.

What are the main risks of lung resection?

Risks include air leaks, infection, bleeding, and reduced breathing capacity, all of which your thoracic surgeon will discuss in the context of your specific lung condition and overall health.
