Splenectomy is performed for a ruptured spleen after trauma, blood disorders like immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) or hereditary spherocytosis that cause the spleen to destroy healthy blood cells, splenic tumors or cysts, and hypersplenism where an enlarged spleen traps too many blood cells.

Signs You May Need Splenectomy

Warning signs include left upper abdominal pain especially after trauma, easy bruising or bleeding from low platelet counts, fatigue from anemia, a feeling of fullness or a palpable mass in the upper left abdomen, and in trauma cases, signs of internal bleeding like dizziness and low blood pressure.

Types of Splenectomy

Splenectomy can be performed as an emergency open procedure for trauma with active bleeding, or as a planned laparoscopic splenectomy for blood disorders or tumors, which offers a smaller incision and faster recovery when the patient is stable enough for a minimally invasive approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I live a normal life without a spleen?

Yes, most people live normally without a spleen, though the liver and other organs take over some of its immune functions, and lifelong precautions against certain infections are advised.

Will I need vaccinations after splenectomy?

Yes, because the spleen helps fight certain bacterial infections, vaccinations against pneumococcus, meningococcus, and Haemophilus influenzae are recommended before or shortly after surgery.

Is laparoscopic splenectomy safer than open surgery?

For planned, non-emergency cases, laparoscopic splenectomy generally means less pain and faster recovery, but emergency trauma cases often require open surgery for rapid bleeding control.

What precautions are needed long-term?

Patients without a spleen should seek prompt medical attention for fevers and may be advised to take preventive antibiotics in certain situations — discuss a personalized plan with your doctor.

How long is the hospital stay?

Typically 2-5 days depending on whether the surgery is done laparoscopically or as an open emergency procedure.
