Why Cervical Disc Replacement Is Needed

Performed for a damaged or degenerated cervical disc causing nerve compression or spinal cord pressure, most often from disc herniation or degenerative disc disease, when it results in significant pain or neurological symptoms that haven't improved with conservative treatment like physiotherapy, medication, or injections. It's an alternative to cervical fusion for appropriately selected patients who want to preserve neck motion.

Signs You May Need Cervical Disc Replacement

Neck pain radiating into the shoulder, arm, or hand, along with numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arm or hand from nerve root compression, or symptoms of spinal cord compression like difficulty with fine hand movements or gait changes in more severe cases. Symptoms that persist or worsen despite weeks of conservative treatment typically prompt surgical evaluation.

Types of Cervical Disc Replacement

A single-level artificial disc replaces one damaged disc, while multi-level replacement addresses more than one affected disc level in appropriately selected patients. It's often compared with anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, which removes the disc and fuses the adjacent vertebrae instead of preserving motion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Disc replacement or fusion - which is better?

Disc replacement preserves natural neck motion and may reduce stress on adjacent discs over time, while fusion is a well-established, durable option; suitability depends on your specific disc pathology and spine surgeon's assessment.

How long is the recovery?

Most patients return to light activities within a couple of weeks, with fuller recovery and return to normal activity by 4-6 weeks.

Will the artificial disc need to be replaced later?

Modern cervical disc implants are designed to be durable long-term, though as with any implant, some may eventually need revision, which your surgeon can discuss based on current implant data.

What are the risks of the surgery?

Risks include infection, nerve injury, and implant-related complications, though this is a well-established procedure with good outcomes in appropriately selected patients.

Am I a candidate for disc replacement?

Candidacy depends on factors like the specific disc level, extent of arthritis, and bone quality; your spine surgeon will assess this with imaging and clinical examination.
